Skippable MCU titles, and why
Let's be clear upfront: "skippable" doesn't mean "bad." Plenty of these are well made, and every one has fans. This guide is about time. The Road is 59 titles before Avengers: Doomsday, and if you're trying to get ready, some of them simply don't connect to what's coming.
So think of this as a "later" pile, not a "never" pile. Everything here is safe to save for after Doomsday.
How we're handling claims:
- Confirmed: Marvel's announced Doomsday cast and verifiable facts like episode counts.
- Reported: things outlets have said. We don't use them to make calls here.
- Opinion: every "skip for now" verdict is our opinion. You might weigh things differently, and that's fine.
We're also not guessing at Doomsday's plot. A title lands here because it doesn't build a character on Marvel's announced cast list, or because later movies already cover what it sets up. We're not making a claim about what the movie will or won't show.
How we decided
We used three questions:
- Does it build a character Marvel has announced for Doomsday? If yes, it's not on this list.
- Do later titles re-explain what it sets up? If they do, it's a safer skip.
- Is it mostly self-contained? Standalone stories are the easiest to move to the later pile.
That's it. No grades for quality, just relevance.
Movies you can save for later
The Incredible Hulk
Verdict (opinion): Skip it for now. It's an early MCU entry with a different lead actor, and its threads were mostly picked up elsewhere or left alone.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: The Hulk you'll meet in later movies is a different take, and those movies tell you what you need. One character from here returns much later in Captain America: Brave New World, and that movie gets you up to speed.
Iron Man 2
Verdict (opinion): Fun in places, but it's mostly a bridge movie. Worth it if you're a completist.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: It sets up pieces of the Avengers project that The Avengers itself covers better. Black Widow's introduction here is brief, and her own movie does far more with her family.
Thor: The Dark World
Verdict (opinion): The one Thor movie we'd move to the back. The Loki scenes are the strongest part.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: Its main villain isn't on the announced cast, and its big idea comes up again more clearly later. If you're watching for Loki, Ragnarok and the Loki series give you more.
Eternals
Verdict (opinion): Ambitious and pretty to look at, but it's long and mostly self-contained.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: None of its cast showed up in Marvel's announced Doomsday lineup. It introduces a lot of cosmic ideas that haven't been widely picked up since. Save it for a slow weekend.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Verdict (opinion): Split opinions, and we lean "later." It's bright and goofy and not essential.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: Chris Hemsworth is on the Doomsday cast, so this one's a closer call. But Ragnarok and Endgame do the heavy lifting for where Thor stands. Love and Thunder adds color more than direction.
Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home
Verdict (opinion): Both are fun, especially Homecoming. They're just not Doomsday prep.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: Tom Holland wasn't in Marvel's announced Doomsday cast livestream. If you love Spider-Man, watch them. If you're on a deadline, they can wait.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Verdict (opinion): A strong, emotional finish to a trilogy. It's a hard one to put on a skip list, but it's here for time reasons.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: It wraps up its own team's story. None of the Guardians actors were in Marvel's announced Doomsday cast. That makes the whole Guardians run a great after-Doomsday binge.
Shows you can save for later
Shows take more time than movies, so this is where a skip list saves you the most hours.
Moon Knight (6 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): A strong lead performance in a story that lives in its own corner.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: It's basically standalone. Nothing in the announced cast connects to it. It's great if you like psychological thrillers, but it's not prep.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (9 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): A comedy first. The meta humor is the point, and that won't be for everyone.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: Nine episodes is a big time ask for something with little link to the Doomsday cast. It's a fun palate cleanser after the big movie.
Secret Invasion (6 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): Moody and slow. Opinions are split, and ours is "later."
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: Later movies tell you what you need to know about its fallout. You won't be lost without it.
Echo (5 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): Short, grounded and focused on its lead.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: It's tied to the street-level side of Marvel, not the Avengers side. Five episodes makes it an easy pick-up later.
Agatha All Along (9 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): Witchy, musical and a lot of fun if WandaVision clicked for you.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: It's a self-contained magic story. Nine episodes is a real commitment, and it doesn't build anyone on the announced cast.
Daredevil: Born Again (Season 1: 9 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): Gritty and well-acted. It's in its own lane.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: No direct link to Marvel's announced Doomsday cast. It's great TV on its own terms.
Ironheart (6 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): A follow-up for Riri Williams from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with a magic-versus-tech twist.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: Riri isn't on the announced cast. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever gives you her introduction, and that's enough for now.
What If...? Seasons 2 and 3 (9 and 8 episodes)
Verdict (opinion): The anthology format means quality swings. Season 1 is the best sampler.
Why it's safe to save for after Doomsday: If you want multiverse flavor, a few Season 1 episodes do the job. The later seasons are extras.
Close calls we kept off this list
Some titles almost made it here, and we want to be honest about why they didn't:
- Hawkeye: It looks optional, but it's one of Yelena's best stretches. Florence Pugh is in the announced cast, so it stays.
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Feels light, but it introduces Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen, who's on the announced cast.
- The Marvels: Short and easy to overlook, but it has a scene with Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Grammer is on the announced cast.
- Black Widow: It sets up Yelena and Red Guardian, both of whom carry into Thunderbolts* and the Doomsday cast.
If your time is really tight, these are the next ones to cut. Just know you'll lose some character context.
How much time this actually saves
Count the episodes on the shows list and it's a lot. Add the movies and you're looking at several weekends you get back. That's a rough estimate, not a stopwatch.
A respectful note
Skip lists can sound dismissive. We don't mean it that way. Eternals has real ambition. Guardians Vol. 3 is a big emotional payoff. She-Hulk took a swing at a different tone. Nothing here is "bad." It just isn't what we'd prioritize before Doomsday.
If any of these titles sounds like your kind of thing, watch it. Your enjoyment beats our efficiency math every time.
Keeping track of the later pile
The easiest way to handle a skip list is to not lose it. McuWatch keeps your next title in one place, so you can focus on the prep titles now. Save My Place holds your spot, and Tonight Mode lets you watch and save progress whenever you get back to these.
Wrapping up
Every title here is safe to save for after Doomsday. Focus your time on the movies and shows that build Marvel's announced cast. Come back to this list once the credits roll. Plenty of these will be more fun when you're not racing anything.
